AMD’s Don Woligroski compared Vega to the GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp

Don Woligroski, CPU marketing manager at AMD, has compared their upcoming Vega GPUs to Nvidia’s GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp in a recent AMA session with Tom’s Hardware.

In this Q&A session, Don was asked how Vega compared to Nvidia’s recently released GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp GPUs, responding saying that Vega “looks really nice” in comparison. Below is Don’s full comment on Vega.

Vega performance compared to the Geforce GTX 1080 Ti and the Titan Xp looks really nice.

Right now it is difficult to know what Don meant by this statement, though it seems clear that Vega is going to be marketed against the GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp, which should alleviate fears that Vega would just be a GTX 1080 competitor.

With Don’s post at AMD being in their CPU division and not inside the Radeon Technologies Group, it is also hard to know how much information he would have on AMD’s upcoming Vega GPUs, or if he would have knowledge of any detailed performance numbers. This means that this statement should be taken with a grain of salt, even though the source is an AMD employee.

AMD has been working very hard to clamp down on Vega leaks over the past few months, preventing anyone from being able to get a true look at what this new GPU is capable of.

Given Vega’s architectural improvements over GCN and Polaris, it will no doubt deliver a lot more performance than AMD’s previous GPU architectures, though it is unknown how well this new GPU will perform when compared to the likes of Nvidia’s GTX 1080 Ti and Pascal Titan GPUs.
