Modder add DLSS 5 support to RTX 40 series GPUs using leaked DLL files
Modder patches Nvidia’s leaked DLSS 5 binaries to enable RTX 40 series GPU support
Modders have been using Nvidia’s recently leaked DLSS 5 DLL file to add DLSS 5 Neural Rendering to a huge number of PC games. Using this tech, Nvidia leverages AI compute to add enhanced lighting effects to games, using a game’s original visuals as a baseline. Now, a modder called Uncle Burrito has patched Nvidia’s leaked DLL file to support RTX 40 series GPUs, something that Nvidia may have never intended.
Nvidia’s leaked DLSS 5 DLL file contained CUDA binaries that only worked on Nvidia Blackwell (RTX 50) series GPUs. Uncle Burrito patched these binaries to make them compatible with GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs. Below we can see DLSS 5 Neural Rendering working with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090.
It is currently unknown if Nvidia ever intended to release DLSS 5 for RTX 40 series GPUs. With this update, we can see that DLSS 5 Neural Rendering can work with Nvidia’s older GPUs. That said, Nvidia could still limit the feature to its newest GPUs. Artificial segmentation is a thing after all.
DLSS 5 Neural Rendering has a HUGE performance cost (at least right now)
In the video above, turning on DLSS 5 Neural Rendering in Control with an RTX 4090 lowers framerates from around 130 FPS to around 83 FPS. That’s a 36% performance drop.
While DLSS 5 Neural Rendering has a huge performance impact, remember this is a hacked DLSS 5 implementation. It uses an early DLSS 5 DLL, and a modder added this Neural Rendering implementation, not the game’s developers. Nvidia still has time to further optimise DLSS 5. Furthermore, a direct game integration could run faster than this hacked game implementation. So don’t judge DLSS 5 Neural Rendering based on its performance, at least not yet.
