Modders unlock DLSS Frame Generation on RTX 30 series GPUs
Modders unlock DLSS Multi Frame Generation on RTX 30-series GPUs, making a mockery of Nvidia’s artificial limitations
A new project called DLSSG SM86 has successfully unlocked DLSS Multi Frame Generation support on GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards. Officially, DLSS Multi Frame Generation is only available on GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards. This comes mere days after modders unlocked DLSS Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40-series GPUs.
In the video below, we can see DLSS Multi Frame Generation running on a GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card in Cyberpunk 2077. This is real DLSS Multi Frame Generation, not an alternative frame generation technology. This means that modders have truly added Multi Frame Generation support to older GeForce RTX graphics cards. With this mod, gamers can use up to DLSS 4x Frame Generation.
With the release of DLSS 4 and its more advanced frame generation model, Nvidia replaced its hardware optical flow requirement with an AI model. This eliminated the need for bespoke hardware for DLSS Frame Generation. This appears to be why DLSS Frame Generation can now run on RTX 30 series GPUs.
It is currently unclear if this modded form of DLSS Frame Generation has any disadvantages compared with a true/official Nvidia implementation. Clearly, Nvidia could bring this tech to its older GPUs if they wanted to. That said, doing so would make Nvidia’s RTX 50 series much less appealing as an upgrade option.
