MSI delivers safe 12V-2×6 power with GPU-integrated Safeguard tech
MSI’s RTX 5090 SUPRIM Safeguard puts an end to 12V-2×6 power worries
MSI is the GPU brand that has taken the 12V-2×6/12VHPWR problem the most seriously. They were the first to introduce dual-tone 12V-2×6 cables to ensure cables are fully seated. They then created their Safeguard and Safeguard+ PSUs to detect power imbalances and prevent potential incidents involving melted cables or power connectors. Now, MSI has created its first “Safeguard” graphics card, providing gamers with warning detection during abnormal operating conditions.

MSI’s RTX 5090 SUPRIM Safeguard features current monitoring hardware and several layers of safeguards. The GPU features server-grade eFUSE to protect it against electrical damage. This enables voltage and current monitoring on each of the GPU’s power pins.
MSI Intelligent Power Safeguard
If abnormal power conditions are detected, MSI’s Intelligent Power Safeguard kicks in to inform users of any issues. First, a red LED indicator on the GPU will light up, a system notification will be delivered, and a built-in GPU buzzer will activate. Additionally, an external buzzer can be installed to inform users (as the GPU buzzer will be somewhat muffled when inside a PC case).
After 120 seconds, MSI’s protection lock is activated. This lowers the GPU’s power limit to 70% and locks it there. This should lower the strain on the power connector and prevent the cable from overheating. With these measures in place, users should stop what they are doing, turn off their system, and reseat or replace their 12V-2×6 power cable. This should restore balance to the 12V-2×6 power connector. Note that this process is very similar to MSI’s Safeguard and Safeguard+ PSU technologies.
If you are concerned about the safety of 12V-2×6 power connectors, MSI’s Safeguard tech has you covered. Whether it’s on your PSU or GPU, it detects a load/current imbalance before excessive heat can build up. This allows users to act before any damage can be done.
So far, MSI has only integrated Safeguard tech into its RTX 5090 SUPRIM Safeguard GPU. Moving forward, it’s likely that MSI will integrate this tech into more of its future high-end GPU models. With Safeguard-enabled GPUs and PSUs, MSI fans have solid GPU protection options.
