PlayStation reveals “Project Amethyst”, a gaming-focused AI collaboration with AMD

Sony and AMD plan to transform gaming with AI

With PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony has entered the world of AI gaming, and its Chief Architect, Mark Cerny, wants to explore it further. To this end, Sony (PlayStation) and AMD have partnered to create “Project Amethyst,” a deep AI-focused partnership that should see Machine Learning technologies advance gameplay and graphics.

AMD is already partnered with Sony. AMD is the hardware manufacturer behind PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, and PS5 Pro. The modern PlayStation brand is built on AMD hardware. Now, Sony and AMD are entering a deeper partnership.

When it comes to AI, AMD and Sony have shared goals. Both want to use AI to enhance their gaming hardware. Instead of working separately, Sony and AMD are working together on future AI architectures and creating a “democratised library for machine learning” that developers can utilise. Sony also aims to create “CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks) for Games.”

Note that Sony’s “Amethyst” partnership with AMD isn’t about creating “proprietary” hardware for AMD or PlayStation. It is about creating the tools and architectures that will allow AI and machine learning to transform games. This will allow AI hardware to be used for more tasks beyond upscaling. Through this, Sony/AMD plans to boost gaming graphics and enhance gameplay in new and exciting ways.
