VESA reveals their DisplayHDR True Black 600 Performance Tier
The VESA DisplayHDR True Black standard is designed to differentiate the best of the best, screens that can offer near-perfect black levels while also delivering bright highlights. The DisplayHDR True Black standard started with 400 and 500 tiers, but now display technology has advanced enough for VESA to see the need for a higher-quality display tier. Presenting DisplayHDR TrueBlack 600.Â
For the most part, VESA’s DisplayHDR True Black standard applies exclusively to OLED screens, though future standards like MicroLED will deliver many of the same advanced features. The perfect black offered by these displays deliver unparalleled contrast levels, though bright highlights are often less bright than many HDR-compatible LCD screens, which often compensate for their brighter blacks with even brighter highlights.Â
VESA’s DisplayHDR 600 standard is for displays that can deliver peak brightness levels of over 600 cd/m^2, a 20% increase over DisplayHDR 500. Permissible black levels are lowered to 0.0005Â cd/m^2 with VESA’s DisplayHDR True Black standards, a mere 0.5% of the black levels of a DisplayHDR 600 display. DisplayHDR True Black displays offer black levels that are over 100x lower than generic HDR monitors.Â
With their DisplayHDR True Black 600 standard, VESA has allowed consumers and monitor manufacturers to differentiate higher-end OLED (and similar true black screens) from their competitors.
PR – VESA Announces DisplayHDR True Black 600 Performance Tier
The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced today that it has added a new 600 performance level to its DisplayHDR True Black high dynamic range (HDR) specification and standard. Based on VESA’s widely adopted High-Performance Monitor and Display Compliance Test Specification (DisplayHDR), the DisplayHDR True Black standard is optimized for emissive display technologies, such as organic light emitting diode (OLED) and future microLED displays.
The new DisplayHDR True Black 600 tier offers higher luminance than the existing DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black 400 and 500 tiers. DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black are the display industry’s first fully open standards specifying HDR quality for LCD and emissive displays, respectively. VESA also announced today that three products have already been certified to the new DisplayHDR True Black 600 performance level – the ASUS Vivobook Pro 14, Vivobook Pro 14X and Vivobook 15 laptops. ASUS is formally unveiling these products at a separate company event today.
Incredibly accurate shadow detail for a remarkable visual experience.
Deeper black levels and dramatic increases in dynamic range create a remarkable visual experience:
– Peak luminance of 600 cd/m2
– Brings permissible black level down to 0.0005 cd/m2 â the lowest level that can be effectively measured with industry-standard colorimeters
– 20 percent increase in luminance compared to the True Black 500 level, which results in a noticeably brighter screen while maintaining the same outstanding black level and color quality typified in OLED displays.
DisplayHDR True Black allows for up to 100X deeper black levels in addition to a greater dynamic range and a 4X improvement in rise time compared to VESA’s DisplayHDR 1000 performance tier. This enables a visually stunning experience for home theater and gaming enthusiasts. The new DisplayHDR True Black 600 level requires a 20 percent increase in luminance compared to the True Black 500 level, which results in a noticeably brighter screen while maintaining the same outstanding black level and color quality typified in OLED displays.
