Micron preps 40 Gbps GDDR7 memory for future GPU and AI products

Micron is preparing to push past 40 Gbps with its GDDR7 memory products

As part of their latest earnings call, Micron has confirmed that it has designed its GDDR7 memory to deliver speeds beyond 40 Gbps. That’s over 25% faster than the GDDR7 memory that’s shipping with any currently available graphics card.

This statement paints a bright future for the GDDR7 ecosystem, with higher-speed memory modules enabling the next generational leap in GPU and AI performance.

While we don’t expect to see 40 Gbps GDDR7 modules on gaming GPUs anytime soon, the possibility exists. Perhaps we will see faster GDDR7 memory modules on RTX 60 and Radeon RDNA 5 GPU products?

In close collaboration with NVIDIA, Micron has pioneered the adoption of LPDRAM for servers, and since NVIDIA’s launch of LPDRAM in their GB product family, Micron has been the sole supplier of LPDRAM in the data center. In addition to our leadership in HBM and LP5, Micron is also well-positioned with our GDDR7 products, which are designed to deliver ultra-fast performance with pin speeds exceeding 40 Gbps, along with best-in-class power efficiency to address needs of certain future AI systems.

Based on leaked specifications for Nvidia’s RTX 50 SUPER series GPUs, Nvidia appears to be focusing on memory capacity rather than memory speeds. However, there are rumours that Nvidia could use GDDR7 36 Gbps memory with its RTX 5080 SUPER. It isn’t uncommon for GPU manufacturers to avoid using the faster memory available, both due to pricing and availability reasons. This is another reasons why we don’t expect to see 40 Gbps GDDR7 memory on GPUs in the near future.
