7 Studio Ghibli movies have arrived at Netflix UK, and 14 more are coming

Netflix has released seven Studio Ghibli movies onto its service, officially starting the company’s long term agreement with the iconic Japanese studio. While UK availability has started, Netflix users in the US, Canada and Japan will not receive this content due to licensing issues.

In March seven additional Studio Ghibli films are due to arrive on the service, and in April seven more films are due to be released onto the Streaming platform. This makes up the entirety of Studio Ghibli’s catalogue of feature films. Studio Ghibli has confirmed that they are working on two more feature films in 2020.

As of today, My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Tales of Earthsea, Porco Rosso, Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves are all available on Netflix. At this time Netflix has not confirmed which films will release in March and April.

Netflix’s staggered release of Studio Ghibli’s movie collection is likely to ensure long-term subscriptions to the company’s streaming services. If Ghibli fans start today, they will need to subscribe to Netflix for three months to watch Studio Ghibli’s catalogue of movies, a factor which will undoubtedly generate a lot of revenue for the company.
