AMD transforms its AI outlook with ROCm 7.0 – 3x Performance Gains

AMD highlights 3x+ performance gains with ROCm 7.0

AMD has fundamentally altered its AI outlook, and much of that change is thanks to ROCm 7.0. ROCm, AMD’s Radeon Open Compute platform, is a software stack that enables accelerated computing across AMD’s GPU hardware. This includes AMD’s Ryzen AI laptops, desktop GPUs, and server-grade Instinct GPUs.

With ROCm 7.0, AMD will be integrating its software stack into Windows and Linux, offering easy installation for users. Furthermore, AMD plans to launch major updates to ROCm every two weeks, delivering users performance enhancements and new features.

For a long time, AMD was considered behind Nvidia when it came to AI software. Now, with ROCm 7.0, AMD has delivered major performance gains on its hardware, which are enough to push its latest AMD Instinct accelerates past their Nvidia counterparts.

In inferencing and training workloads, AMD 3x (or greater) performance boosts when moving from ROCm 6 to ROCm 7. With ROCm 7, AMD notes that its new Instinct MI355X accelerator can outperform Nvidia’s Blackwell B200 by 30% with DeepSeek R1.

ROCm 7 represents a huge leap in AMD’s technical abilities, adding support for FP8, FP6, FP4, and mixed precision datatypes. With AMD’s HIPIFY utility, users can also convert CUDA code to run on ROCm, allowing developers to transition away from CUDA with ease.

Thanks to its broader hardware support, Windows support, and greatly improved performance, AMD’s latest ROCm updates have turned the company into a true Nvidia competitor in the AI space. With even faster AI hardware on the horizon, AMD’s shaping up to become a much larger player in the AI space. However, it’s unclear if these changes are enough to undermine Nvidia’s AI dominance.
