Twitter will soon be changing its name to X - Elon Musk Confirms

Musk is renaming Twitter, and his new name makes no sense

After paying $44 billion for Twitter last year, Elon Musk has confirmed that he plans to completely change the company’s branding, moving away from the company’s iconic tweeting bird brand and towards “X”. Yes, Twitter is getting renamed to X.

For those familiar with Musk’s history, you will know that Musk is a fan of the letter X. In 1999, Elon Musk became one of the founders of x.com, an online bank that later merged with Cofinity Inc to become PayPal. Musk also had a son in 2020 that he called X Æ A-Xii, who is nicknamed X.

Musk has previously discussed plans to make “X, the everything app”, a social media platform that is seemingly inspired by China’s WeChat platform. WeChat brings together messaging, payments, an online marketplace and public posts under one banner, and Musk is likely planning to do something similar with Twitter/X.

Below is what Twitter’s CEO Linda Yaccarino had to say about the upcoming branding change. As you can see, Yaccarino’s plan for X sounds a lot like how we described WeChat earlier.

It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.

X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.

For years, fans and critics alike have pushed Twitter to dream bigger, to innovate faster, and to fulfill our great potential. X will do that and more. We’ve already started to see X take shape over the past 8 months through our rapid feature launches, but we’re just getting started.

There’s absolutely no limit to this transformation. X will be the platform that can deliver, well….everything. @elonmusk and I are looking forward to working with our teams and every single one of our partners to bring X to the world.

Earlier this year, Musk revealed his AI startup xAI, a company that will likely work with Musk’s other companies to exploit the potential of artificial intelligence wherever possible. This includes working with Twitter/X, Tesla, and even SpaceX.
