Valve reverses course on Steam Deck LCD battery “sunset”
Valve confirms that iFixit is getting resupplied with Steam Deck LCD batteries
Following reports that Valve was “starting to sunset” spare parts for its Steam Deck LCD, most notably its battery, Valve has confirmed that replacement batteries will be returning to the repairer’s storefront. New stock for the Steam Deck LCD battery should be in stock next week.
iFixit staff has been told that batteries and screens for Valve’s original Steam Deck were being phased out. iFixit’s CEO, Kyle Wiens, confirmed to The Verge that they indeed heard that Valve were no longer making replacement screens and batteries for their original handheld.
Wiens later confirmed that Valve has “hooked us up with a supplier”, which should allow them to source the same OEM battery parts as Valve. This should enable strong long-term repairability for Valve’s handheld.
We just confirmed with iFixit that they plan to have batteries back in stock by next week.
iFixit will be getting the same OEM parts sourced through Valve’s partners that they always have.

Valve has reportedly chosen to continue manufacturing the Steam Deck LCD’s battery, and has given iFixit the information they need to maintain support when they discontinue official parts. No long-term production commitment has been made for the Steam Deck LCD’s other parts. This includes the device’s screen.
Valve has reached out and is sending us a new batch of Steam Deck LCD batteries!
iFixit will move heaven and earth to keep supporting these handhelds.

Supporting discontinued hardware is hard
Valve stopped producing its Steam Deck LCD last year. Outside of long-term support for their existing handhelds, Valve has no reason to continue producing parts for the product. Valve’s newer Steam Deck OLED uses different hardware. As such, the only reason Valve has to produce new Steam Deck LCD parts is to continue supporting users.
Thankfully, Valve has chosen to continue providing iFixit with batteries for its original Steam Deck models. It is possible that this situation was caused by Valve simply underestimating the number of batteries it needed. After all, it’s hard to guess the number of replacement parts needed to deliver long-term support. Guess too low, and users can’t get batteries soon after the product is discontinued. Guess too high, and Valve has spent too much money on batteries that need to be warehoused. It’s a difficult balance.
The good news is that Steam Deck LCD owners can now expect replacement batteries to be available well into the future.
