AMD confirms that Sony PlayStation assisted in FSR 4’s development
AMD confirmed that Project Amethyst models were used to develop their FSR 4 AI upscaler
Last year, Sony revealed “Project Amethyst,” an AI collaboration in which Sony PlayStation and AMD pool resources to advance gaming gameplay and graphics using AI. Now, AMD has confirmed that its new FSR 4 AI upscaler uses models co-developed with Sony Interactive Entertainment. In a sense, this makes FSR 4 a PlayStation/AMD collaboration.
“This is just the beginning.” That’s what AMD said about their use of Project Amethyst. PlayStation and AMD will collaborate further to create more advanced AI tools and technologies. The development of FSR 4 is a massive success for AMD, and a clear sign that their efforts with Sony on Project Amethyst are paying off.
Most of Sony’s PlayStation PC releases support FSR 4
If you look at AMD’s list of FSR 4 supported games, much of this list is comprised of Sony’s PlayStation PC titles. This includes The Last of Us Part I, God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and others. This is thanks to Sony’s adoption of FSR 3.1 and its upgradable API into their PC games. Sony’s support for FSR 4 makes a lot of sense, now that we know that FSR 4’s development includes Project Amethyst models.
Happy Radeon Day! Weâre proud to collaborate with @PlayStation on Project Amethyst! ð¥
FSR 4 is looking fantastic! Excited for the co-development with Sony Interactive Entertainment on the models used for the FSR 4 upscaler.

In time, we expect AMD and PlayStation to use Project Amethyst to create new AI tools and technologies for games. We also expect FSR 4 to be updated as AMD’s AI models improve. Like DLSS, we expect AMD’s AI upscaler to evolve over time.
It remains to be seen how FSR 4’s development will impact Sony/PlayStation. Sony has its own PSSR upscaler for PlayStation 5. PSSR could be improved through Sony’s collaboration with AMD. This could improve the image quality of future PlayStation 5 Pro games. It is also possible that PSSR and FSR 4 may become more similar over time.
