AMD’s FSR 3 tech is coming to consoles, starting with Immortals of Aveum
Immortals of Aveum is getting upgrades with FSR 3 and HDR on consoles and PC
Ascendent Studios’ Immortals of Aveum is about to receive two major updates on consoles. These two updates will add HDR support to the game, and the second will add AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) technology to the game on consoles. This will make Immortals of Aveum the first game to support FSR 3 Frame Generation on consoles.
When the console versions receive FSR 3 support, Immortals of Aveum’s PC version will also be updated with a newer version of FSR 3. This will add FSR 3 frame generation support to Variable Refresh Rate monitor users. This will also address the frame pacing issues and judder, that AMD’s early version of FSR 3 featured. HDR support is planned for this Immortals of Aveum’s PC version at a later date.
What is Frame Generation?
AMD’s FSR 3 Frame Generation technology boosts the framerate of supported games by adding interpolated frames between traditionally rendered frames. This can make games appear much smoother in motion. This technology could be used to boost 60 FPS games to 120 FPS. This will allow more gamers to benefit from the 120Hz refresh rates of modern TVs. Sadly, AMD’s Frame Generation tech won’t boost 30 FPS games to 60 FPS. Simply put, Frame Generation works best when boosting already high framerates (as there are smaller gaps/less change between frames).
Immortals of Aveum will be the first of many console games with FSR 3
Most PC enthusiasts expect the newest games to support Frame Generation. For console gamers, the benefits are less clear. On consoles, Frame Generation developers to increase the framerate of their games on 120Hz displays. However, this should only be the case for games that already target 60 FPS.
Frame Generation will be a great feature for console gamers own 120Hz screens that support VRR. With AMD’s FSR 3.1 tech boosting image quality, we are likely to see more developers use AMD’s upscaling tech in the console space. Another change with FSR 3.1 is the ability to use Frame Generation with alternative upscalers. That’s great news for Sony, as they plan to launch their own PSSR AI upscaler with PlayStation 5 Pro.
