PlayStation 5 Pro leak details Sony’s PSSR AI upscaler
Sony has its own AI upscaler for PlayStation 5 Pro, and it will give the new console a major boost
According to a new leak, Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5) console will support an AI upscaler called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). This upscaling solution is said to deliver better results than AMD’s FSR 2 technology, enabling higher quality upscaling results on Sony’s new console.
AMD, Sony’s PlayStation hardware partner, are also working on an AI upscaling solution. It would not be surprising if Sony’s AI upscaler is very similar to AMD’s. Leaked information also suggests that Sony’s AI upscaler is performance friendly. PSSR reportedly only takes 2ms of PS5 Pro GPU time to upscale from 1080p to 4K and only require 250MB of memory. An update to the upscaler could also enable 8K resolution support and make the process even faster. Are Sony finally fulfilling the 8K promise of current-generation console hardware?
Currently, it is unknown if any form of PSSR will work on Sony’s existing PS5 console. It is likely that PSSR may be PS5 Pro exclusive. That would give the standard PS5 less raw performance and lower quality upscaling.
Information about PSSR leaked through Moore’s Law is Dead on YouTube. Sadly, we only have the screenshot below to compare PSSR’s quality to FSR 2 and TAAU (TAA Upscaling). While the image below shows that PSSR may appear be more detailed in some areas, the low quality of the image makes it hard to make any real comparisons.
PSSR promises to deliver better results than AMD’s FSR 2 technology. That’s great news for gamers. That said, it remains to be seen how it will compare with Nvidia’s DLSS tech, or Intel’s XeSS AI upscaler.
If Sony’s PSSR leak is true, their PlayStation 5 Pro will be a hit amongst graphics enthusiasts. Not only will PS5 Pro feature more powerful hardware, but it will also feature a higher quality upscaler. That means that Sony’s visuals will benefit from both the PS5 Pro’s additional hardware grunt and get quality boost from AI upscaling.
