Crysis 4 “on hold” as Crytek announce layoffs
Crytek confirms around 60 layoffs and that “the next Crysis” is “on hold”
Today, Crytek announced that it will be laying off around 15% of its staff, affecting around 60 employees. Crytek also confirmed that they put “the next Crysis game (Crysis 4) on hold” in Q3 2024 and that they have been shifting developers to Hunt Showdown 1896.
In their announcement post below, Crytek stated that the layoffs were “inevitable to move forward.” The developer stated that it “cannot continue as before and remain financially sustainable.”
Like so many of our peers, we aren’t immune to the complex, unfavourable market dynamics that have hit our industry these past several years,
It pains us greatly to share today that we must lay off an estimated 15 percent of our around 400 employees. The layoffs affect development teams and shared services. This has not been an easy decision to make, as we deeply appreciate the hard work of our talented teams. After putting the development of the next Crysis game on hold in Q3 2024, we have been trying to shift developers over to Hunt: Showdown 1896.
While Hunt: Showdown 1896 is still growing, Crytek cannot continue as before and remain financially sustainable. Even after ongoing efforts to reduce costs and cut operating expenses, we have determined that layoffs are inevitable to move forward. Crytek will offer affected employees severance packages and career assistance services.

Crytek revealed that Crysis 4 was in development in 2022. Since then, we have heard nothing about the project. While being “on hold” doesn’t mean cancelled, today’s announcement had made the future of the Crysis franchise unclear.
It is sad to see that Crytek has been forced into layoffs. Layoffs have become all too common within today’s gaming industry. We hope that Crytek’s affected employees can transition to other jobs quickly. We also hope that Crytek will be able to work on projects beyond Hunt Showdown.
Today’s news comes less than a month after Ubisoft confirmed 185 layoffs across the company. This “targetted restructuring” included the closure of Ubisoft Leamington in the UK.
