Dassault Systemes launches 3DEXPERINCE SOLIDWORKS for Makers

Dassault Systemes has opened up their 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS platform to Makers, granting them access to cloud-based instances of their professional 3D design applications without the need for expensive workstation-grade PCs. All you will need is an internet connection.

For Makers, this move will grant affordable access to the Solidworks platform to that outside of research, education or industry, costing $9.99 per month or $99 per year. This opens up Solidworks’ professional toolset to hobbyists, giving Dassault Systemes a new revenue stream while opening up their toolset to many new potential users.

As a 3D printing enthusiast trained in Solidworks, the inability to affordably access Solidworks at home has been a major bugbear. While I would prefer this SolidWorks for Makers program to feature an option for SolidWorks that is not cloud-based, this move is a solid step in the right direction for increasing the accessibility of the Solidworks toolset.

We have some great news! The world’s best design tools are now available for your personal projects!  As a hobbyist, you design, create, and share your incredible ideas with others.  With our intuitive cloud-connected Computer Aided Design (CAD) modeling tools that the professionals use, you can make marvelous things your way.

3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS for Makers includes 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS. This powerful parametric modeling tool has the user interface and features you know and love. 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS CAD installs locally on your computer and saves your design data on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, keeping everything safe and secure on the cloud.

But that’s not all. With 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS for Makers, you can design anywhere with our fully online design solutions: 3D Creator and 3D Sculptor. 3D Creator allows you to create precise parametric designs, and 3D Sculptor lets you mold with digital clay while designing online with Sub-D modeling. You can easily switch back and forth between these two different design tools, and connect and share information with 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS. 3D Creator and 3D Sculptor are fully browser-based and can be used anytime, anywhere, on any device—all you need is an internet connection.

Dassault Systemes launches 3DEXPERINCE SOLIDWORKS for Makers

One of the major weaknesses of 3DEXPEREINCE SOLIDWORK for Makers is its lack of Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) features, which may make solutions like Autodesk’s Fusion 360 a lot more appealing to creators, at least right now.

We received the following response when we asked the SOLIDWORKS team about their Makers package missing CAM tools. “We understand that, while this offer currently includes important tools for design, there is certainly more to come that will benefit our users. Stay tuned for more!” Sadly, this comment does not confirm that CAM tools are coming to 3DEXPEREINCE SOLIDWORK for Makers; it merely suggests that they are.

If you have a passion for making products, there are SOLIDWORKS design tools and a global community of creative makers for you!
