DLSS 2 & 3 is coming to Starfield, modder PureDark confirms

DLSS is expected to come to Starfield on day-1 thanks to the modder PureDark

Bethesda’s newest RPG, Starfield, is expected to launch without support for Nvidia’s DLSS technologies, something that has greatly annoyed owners of Nvidia GeForce graphics cards. As an AMD partnered game, Starfield is expected to launch on PC with support for the company’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 technology (possibly FidelityFX Super Resolution 3), and lack support for competing upscalers.

While AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology works on Non-AMD graphics cards, Nvidia’s DLSS 2 upscaling technology has been documented to deliver higher levels of image quality in most games, making DLSS a better upscaling option for Nvidia users. On top of that, Nvidia’s DLSS 3 Frame Generation technique currently has no AMD counterpart, though that could change when AMD launches FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.

With Starfield likely lacking official support for DLSS, the modder PureDark, who has previously created DLSS 2 and DLSS 3 mods for other games, has confirmed that they plan to create a DLSS 2/DLSS 3 mod for Starfield, and that this mod will likely be available on day-1 of Starfield’s release.

There have been a lot of incorrect reports that PureDark has received a review code of Starfield to allow his mod to be developed quickly. This is not true, with PureDark confirming that his day-1 release plans for his DLSS 2/3 mod is due to his ability to re-utilise around 90% of his DLSS mod code from previous projects. PureDark’s Starfield review code rumours are untrue, and stemmed from incorrectly translated posts and incorrect assumptions.

Mods behind a Patreon paywall

PureDark has previously released DLSS 3 mods for The Last of Us Part 1, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Elden Ring, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Sadly, all of these mods are only available to supporters of PureDark’s Patreon, and it is unknown if any of these mods will ever be made available for free to PC gamers.

It is likely that PureDark’s Starfield DLSS mod will also be available exclusively to Patreon subscribers, limiting the number of gamers that will be able to benefit from DLSS in Starfield. The good news is that PureDark’s mod will be suitable for all users of RTX GPUs, adding DLSS 2 to RTX 20/30 series GPU users and DLSS 3 for users of RTX 40 series GPUs.
