Fans are bringing Halo 5: Guardians’ campaign to PC

A dedicated Halo fan is bringing the series’ last remaining campaign to PC

If there’s one thing that annoys me as a Halo fan and PC gamer, it’s that Halo 5 isn’t available on PC. Yes, it isn’t the most beloved game in the series, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to see Halo 5 on my chosen platform. Thankfully, a dedicated fan, “danielmccluskey” on GitHub, is working to unofficially bring the game to PC through Halo 5: Forge (which is available on PC).

Right now, this small hobby project has managed to get Halo 5’s first two campaign missions running on PC. While the project is still experimental, and there are certainly bugs, it is amazing to finally see Halo 5: Guardians’ campaign running on PC.

Below is a video of the game’s first two campaign missions running on PC: Osiris and Blue Team. This PC project uses Halo 5: Forge and extracted files from the Xbox version of Halo 5: Guardians. This project is not a recompilation project and requires Halo 5: Forge to run. As such, this project is only available on Windows PCs.

(It’s playable, but it’s definitely a work in progress)

At one point, Xbox did plan to bring Halo 5 to PC. According to Tyler Owens, a former Infrastructure Engineer for 343 Industries, the studio ran into “significant tech hurdles” when they first worked on a PC version of Halo 5. These hurdles led to the project being scrapped. As a result, Halo 5 is the only Halo game not available on PC.

The “halo50nPC” project aims to bring Halo 5’s campaign to PC. It doesn’t aim to bring back the game’s multiplayer or other features. If this project is successful, PC gamers will finally be able to play every Halo campaign on PC.
