Microsoft unveils DirectStorage 1.4, and it aims to transform gaming
Microsoft have launched their first preview of DirectStorage 1.4
At GDC 2026, Microsoft released the public preview of DirectStorage 1.4 and the Game Asset Conditioning Library. These tools arrive as part of Microsoft’s next-generation feature set for “Project Helix“, Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox.
With DirectStorage 1.4, Microsoft has officially added support for Zstandard compression. This popular open source codec is known for its competitive compression ratios and fast decompression performance. Alongside DirectStorage, Zstandard will help Microsoft reduce game file sizes.
With their Game Asset Conditioning Library, Microsoft can reportedly improve asset compression ratios by up yo 50%. Using this tool, developers can condition their textures to make them more compressible, allowing them to be squeezed into smaller file sizes without a noticeable loss in quality. This is achieved through tools like Block-Level Entropy Reduction (BLER) and Component-Level Entropy Reduction (CLER), the latter of which uses machine learning.

DirectStorage 1.4 will have broad hardware support
Microsoft has co-engineered DirectStorage 1.4 with GPU hardware vendors to ensure strong Zstandard decompression support across all gaming hardware. Driver updates are due to arrive this year from all vendors to deliver better Zstandard decompression performance, paving the way towards DirectStorage 1.4 adoption. Below is what AMD, Intel, Nvidia and Qualcomm has to say about DirectStorage 1.4.
AMD: “Aligning the industry on an open compression standard builds a foundation for future game titles to deliver immersive experiences with even larger worlds than realistically possible today. We plan to make optimizations for AMD GPUs available in a public driver during the second half of 2026 and look forward to seeing how developers use these investments to enhance the player experience.” – Daniel Staheli, CVP Software Development, AMD
Intel: “We’re co-engineering with Microsoft to tune Zstandard decompression through DirectStorage across our GPU architectures. We look forward to sharing our performance improvements in the months ahead.” – Lisa Pearce, Corporate Vice President, Software Group, Intel
NVIDIA: “NVIDIA is excited to bring Zstd support to game developers, with decompression optimizations tailored for NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs arriving in the second half of this year.” – Patrick Neill, Distinguished Engineer, NVIDIA
Qualcomm: “Before the end of the year, we’re excited to bring tuned driver updates that reflect our investments in Zstd decompression on our platforms. We look forward to these investments ensuring reliable, high performance asset streaming across Windows games.” – Nagendra Kumar, Senior Director of Engineering, Qualcomm
DirectStorage aims to better utilise the fast storage mediums inside modern PCs and consoles. With version 1.4, Microsoft aims to enable higher levels of file compression and enable smoother asset streaming for future PC/Xbox games. If successful, loading times will be faster, asset streaming will be smoother, and game files will be smaller. That’s a win-win-win for gamers.
While DirectStorage has not been widely adopted among PC developers, this new iteration offers several perks that developers will find interesting. Note that one of the biggest upgrades that modern consoles have delivered is their fast SSD storage, which has slashed loading times. If developers want to keep loading times snappy moving forward, asset compression may be vital. Furthermore, for large open-world games, improved asset streaming performance could be a game-changer.
If Microsoft can get hardware vendors and developers to adopt it, this tech should make games smaller while retaining asset quality. Furthermore, it should reduce the download sizes of future games. This is part of what makes Xbox’s “Project Helix” special. If Microsoft can make more efficient use of its hardware, Project Helix could be a really special package for gamers and developers.
