Minecraft drops VR support with its latest update
Mojang officially drops VR/MR support in Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Mojang has officially removed VR/MR support from Minecraft Bedrock Edition as part of its 1.21.80 update. This doesn’t just drop support for PCVR headsets, but also drops support for PlayStation VR (PSVR 1) headsets. PlayStation VR2 support was never added to Minecraft Bedrock Edition on PlayStation 5.
This removal comes two months after Mojang’s previously announced “March 2025” timeline. Now, official virtual reality support has been removed from the game.
Below is what Mojang has to say about Minecraft’s VR support in October 2024,
VR / MR
Our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025, when you will receive your final update. After you receive the final update, you will still receive updates on your PC and be able to play without a VR/MR device. From this point on you can keep building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Minecoins) will continue to be available on a non-VR/MR graphics device such as a computer monitor. You will no longer be able to use your VR/MR device with Minecraft as it will no longer be supported in the latest updates.
If you are a fan of Minecraft in VR, PC gamers can still enjoy unofficial VR support through mods. Minecraft’s Java edition has Vivecraft (for SteamVR-compatible VR headsets) and Questcraft (for Meta Quest headsets). This means that Minecraft players can still play a version of the game in VR. That said, this will be of no help to the players who already have worlds in the non-Java versions of the game.
Sadly, VR has not proved popular enough to justify long-term support from Minecraft’s developers. That may change if VR suddenly receives widespread adoption. That said, the return of virtual reality support for Minecraft seems unlikely, at least for now.
