Sony reportedly halts PSVR2 production as inventory piles up
Sony’s working on PSVR2 PC compatibility to help shift unsold inventory
According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR2) headset is not selling well. The accessory’s high price tag and its perceived lack of content has resulted in lower than expected sales. This has resulted in a large amount of unsold PSVR2 inventory that Sony now needs to store. This pile of unsold inventory is large enough for Sony to stop producing their VR headset.
Sony are reportedly now working on PC compatibility for their second generate VR headset. This would allow users of the company’s PlayStation VR 2 headset to play PC VR games using their devices. This gives Sony’s VR headset a larger potential userbase. It may also help encourage developers to create more VR games.
Right now, Meta’s Quest 2 headset is the most poplar PCVR headsets on the market, with the Quest 3 quickly gaining market share. Should Sony throw their hat into the PCVR arena, the increased competition could be good for the VR ecosystem as a whole. It would also give Meta/Facebook haters a strong high-end headset option that is more reasonably priced than the Valve Index.
So far, Sony’s bet on the console VR market has not paid off. While PlayStation 5 has the raw gaming horsepower needed to create strong VR experiences, there doesn’t seem to be enough developers that are willing to create headset-selling games for PSVR2. That is unlikely to change unless Sony can produce strong PSVR 2 sales numbers.
