Nvidia orders partners to limit 8GB RTX 5060 Ti supply – report claims

Nvidia reportedly reduces 8GB RTX 5060 Ti supply in response to low sales

According to a report from Board Channels, Nvidia has told its board partners to limit their supply of 8GB RTX 5060 Ti graphics cards. This is due to lower-than-expected sales for the 8GB version of this graphics card. Simply put, gamers are not purchasing the 8GB version of this GPU, which is forcing Nvidia and its partners to focus on the 16GB model.

This new report makes similar claims to prior reporting from September. Nvidia wants to limit 8GB RTX 5060 Ti GPU supply to prevent oversupply and forced price reductions. Oversupply of these GPUs risks them becoming “unsold inventory”, which would be bad news for Nvidia and its partners.

Why aren’t gamers buying 8GB GPUs?

Modern games use more memory than ever, so much so that many newer games do not run well on graphics cards with less than 10GB of VRAM. For higher-resolution gaming, 12GB of VRAM is now considered the minimum required to ensure a good experience. For gamers who want a more “future-proof” gaming system, 16GB of VRAM (or more) is what’s considered desirable. In other words, 8GB GPUs are now considered antiquated. 8GB GPUs do not guarantee a good gaming experience with modern titles. This has led to low sales of sub-12GB graphics cards.

In August, data from Mindfactory confirmed that 16GB graphics cards accounted for around 80% of GPU sales at the company. Clearly, today’s gamers want graphics cards that feature more VRAM. This has resulted in poor sales for Nvidia’s 8GB graphics cards. 8GB graphics cards can struggle to play many modern PC releases without performance issues. Even at 1080p, many modern games can utilise more than 8GB of VRAM.

Expect Nvidia to continue monitoring RTX 5060 Ti supply

There are two things Nvidia doesn’t want: unsold inventory and GPU prices far below MSRP. By controlling the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB supply, Nvidia can help maintain the current pricing of its graphics cards and prevent these GPUs from sitting on store shelves indefinitely. Nvidia doesn’t want to lower its margins or make a loss by having unsold inventory.
