Rocket League confirms Unreal Engine 6 upgrade

Epic Games teases Unreal Engine 6 with Rocket League

At the Rocket League Paris Major, Epic Games and Psyonix have teased a “new era” and a “new engine” for Rocket League. At the end of their teaser below, an Unreal Engine logo with a 6 was showcased. Clearly, Rocket League is moving to Unreal Engine 6.

Epic Games has not officially unveiled Unreal Engine 6, though the company has discussed its plans for the engine in the past. Last year, Epic Games stated that it planned to deliver “core improvements” to the engine. Additionally, Epic Games stated that the Fortnite versions of Unreal Engine 5 and the mainstream engine will be merged. This should make it easier than ever for companies to move their Unreal Engine content to Fortnite.

Rocket League currently uses Unreal Engine 3. The game’s core technology has not changed since the game’s release in 2015. Moving to Unreal Engine 6 could allow Rocket League to receive more Fortnite-like seasonal or branded content. It should also deliver a massive visual upgrade to the game.

Let’s hope that Unreal Engine 6 fixes Unreal Engine 5’s issues

Epic Games owns Psyonix, the developer behind Rocket League. With this in mind, it is unsurprising that the first Unreal Engine 6 games will likely be Fortnite and Rocket League.

For the most part, Unreal Engine 6 appears to aim to “address a number of the core limitations” of Unreal Engine 5. Unreal Engine 6 may not plan to boost graphical fidelity much over Unreal Engine 5. Instead, it looks like Epic Games plans to help developers get more out of gaming hardware with changes like increased multi-threading support.

Last year, Tim Sweeney stated that he wants to put Unreal Engine users on “a better foundation that the modern world deserves”. Yes, Unreal Engine 6 will include next-generation technologies, but fixing common issues in Unreal Engine 5 should be a priority for Epic Games.
