RPCS3 PS3 emulator devs warn of Nvidia driver issues

RPCS3 developers warn of Nvidia driver-related crashes

The developers of RPCS3 have issued a warning to Nvidia users, confirming that recent Nvidia drivers have been causing their emulator to crash. Specifically, the Nvidia App and its “Nvidia Overlay” are causing issues, crashing the PlayStation 3 (PS3) emulator’s Vulkan renderer. Unfortunately, the RPCS3 team has not told users which Nvidia drivers are specifically affected. However, they do have a workaround for the issue.

If RPCS3 users experience a crash with a fatal error related to the module name “nvglv64.dll”, they should disable the “Nvidia overlay” within the Nvidia App. This will prevent this issue from occurring again. This is an Nvidia-side issue, so RPCS3 cannot fix this bug themselves. It is currently unknown if Nvidia are working to address this driver issue.

Recent weeks have seen major progress from the RPCS3 team. This month, the team confirmed that over 75% of all PlayStation 3 games are now “Playable” using RPCS3. Additionally, a major step towards firmware-free PS3 emulation has been made. This is great news for emulation fans, and for PlayStation 3 (PS3) preservation more generally. With Sony seeming uninterested in PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility, emulation appears to be the only way to keep the platform and its games alive long-term.
