Sony and AMD deliver QSSR upscaling for PlayStation 5 – FSR 4.1 for RDNA 2?
AMD and Sony deliver Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for PlayStation 5
Sony has officially unveiled Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) upscaling, an optimised AI upscaling technology for its PlayStation 5 console. While it doesn’t deliver the same levels of image quality as PSSR 2 on PlayStation 5 Pro, it works on Sony’s older console and delivers greatly improved upscaling results.
AMD and Sony PlayStation developed QSSR through Project Amethyst. The tech delivers a more streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for Sony’s PS5 hardware. This tech will be coming to Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei later today through newly released game updates. This will give both games clearer visuals on Sony’s baseline PlayStation 5 console. QSSR will become available to all PlayStation developers soon, allowing the technology to come to many more games.
Today, we’re excited to announce Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR): a new performance tier of AI upscaling. Born from Project Amethyst, our AI graphics collaboration with AMD, this quick new evolution of PSSR is built on two key innovations:
- A streamlined neural network architecture
- A hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5
With these, we are bringing the benefits of AI-guided upscaling to PS5. While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS
– PlayStation’s Daniel Craig
QSSR appears to be a lightweight version of Sony’s PSSR 2 technology. This enables improved upscaling results at a lower performance cost, making the technology viable on Sony’s baseline PS5 consoles. This should make PlayStation 5 games look much better on high resolution screens, which is great news for gamers everywhere.
Our team at Insomniac works hard to make sure each of our games is a showcase of PlayStation hardware, and we’re excited for Marvel’s Wolverine to be one of the first titles to bring this new QSSR technology to players.
QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey. It’s a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, and it brings a great taste of the PS5 Pro experience to our players on PS5.
Personally, I love seeing how the PlayStation tech teams continually improve the PS5 platform, and I’m excited for more games to make use of QSSR in the future!

Is this FSR 4.1 for RDNA 2?
Earlier this year, AMD promised to deliver FSR 4.1 upscaling to RX 6000 series (RDNA 2) graphics cards. With AMD and Sony delivering QSSR to PlayStation 5 through Project Amethyst, QSSR is likely a form of the FSR 4.1 implementation that AMD plans to bring to RX 6000 series GPUs. After all, PlayStation 5 uses RDNA 2 graphics, and Sony’s PSSR 2 is a variant of AMD’s RDNA 4 FSR 4.1 technology.
If Sony brings QSSR to PlayStation 5, AMD will likely bring FSR 4.1 to RDNA 2 graphics cards soon. QSSR may also become available on Xbox consoles. After all, Xbox Series X/S also use AMD RDNA 2 GPUs, and AMD could bring this tech to Xbox Series X/S as FSR 4.1 for RDNA 2.
