Sony backpedals on PSN login requirements for its PC games
Sony has removed its PSN login requirements from multiple PlayStation PC releases
It’s official: Sony is moving away from having forced PSN logins for their PlayStation PC releases. PlayStation Network logins are becoming optional, starting with the PC release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
So far, four games have had their PSN login requirements removed. In their place are benefits for those who choose to log in. Currently, it is unknown if Sony plans to remove their PlayStation Network login requirements from other PlayStation PC releases.
Moving forward, we expect this practice to be commonplace for all PlayStation PC game releases. However, logins may remain mandatory for multiplayer games.
Starting with tomorrow’s release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PC, we’re working to add more benefits to playing with an account for PlayStation Network. The Last of Us Part II Remastered (coming April 3, 2025), in addition to God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, will all soon be adding in-game content unlocks for PlayStation Network account users.
An account for PlayStation Network will become optional for these titles on PC. Players who still opt to sign into a PlayStation Network account will also enjoy added benefits like trophies and friend management.
Below are the benefits for login into the PlayStation Network for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered.
Sony’s PlayStation Network login requirements were controversial from the start. Why should gamers need to log into the PlayStation Network to play single-player games? Beyond that, this requirement prevented Sony’s PlayStation PC games from being played in countries that do not have access to the PlayStation Network. When PSN logins were added to Helldivers 2, the game had to be removed from sale in over 177 countries. Making PSN logins optional avoids this issue.
