Sony confirms PlayStation Plus price increase citing “market conditions”

PlayStation Plus is getting a price hike on May 20th

Sony has announced that on May 20th, the company’s PlayStation Plus subscription, which is needed for Online Multiplayer on PlayStation, will be getting a price hike. In the UK, their monthly subscription cost will increase from £6.99 to £7.99, and their three-month subscription cost will increase from £19.99 to £21.99. Sony made no change to its 12-month subscription.

This price increase will only impact “new customers in select regions”. Existing subscribers will be able to continue their subscriptions at their current price. However, pricing will change if they later change their subscription tier or their subscription lapses.

Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will increase in select regions. Due to ongoing market conditions, prices will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for 1-month subscriptions and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for 3-month subscriptions. This price change does not apply to current subscribers (except in Turkey and India) unless the existing subscription changes or lapses.

Sony Blames “Market Conditions”

Sony has cited “market conditions” for this price increase, the laziest possible excuse for any price hike. It is vague and non-specific, leading many to call Sony out for their corporate greed. There is no promise of delivering more value at this higher price; it’s just a price increase with no real justification.

The good news is that existing subscribers in most regions will not see their subscription costs increase. Furthermore, people who subscribe before May 20th should be able to lock in Sony’s current (lower) subscription price. That said, this has created a situation where PlayStation Plus Subscribers may feel locked into their subscriptions. After all, a change or lapse can now result in a price increase.

Note that this price increase targets new subscribers specifically. Perhaps Sony is using this to offset the high memory costs of newly manufactured PlayStation 5 consoles. Regardless, this price increase is another hit to people’s pockets at a time when costs are already too high. The days of free PlayStation Network access are long gone…
