Sony draws a line between PlayStation and PC – Their Platform Comes First
So far, Sony has found a lot of success on PC, with both Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone selling exceptionally well on the platform. Sony can make a lot of money on PC, but it has become clear that Sony cannot afford to erode its PlayStation branding and its industry-leading lineup of first-party console exclusives.Â
In a recent interview with Game Informer, Sony’s Herman Hulst made it clear that PlayStation comes first. He assured PlayStation users that they can “rely on us to continue to create platform-defining exclusive content for PlayStation” and that typically the company has waited “about two years” before bringing any of its PlayStation exclusives to PC.Â
While PC is an important market for Sony, Hurst has made it clear that first-party PlayStation titles will not be releasing on PC at launch. As we have seen with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Demon Souls’ recent remake, new PlayStation exclusives will continue to arrive on PlayStation first with no PC marketing. Sony has no plans to alienate its PlayStation fanbase, which means PC gamers will have to wait for potential PC game releases or buy a PlayStation.Â
Â
Typically, there have been about two years between the release on our platform and the PC platform,â he says. âBut you can rely on us to continue to create platform-defining exclusive content for PlayStation â that’s part of the reason why we exist.Itâs really important for us to squeeze the maximum out of the platform, to build showcases for the platform, and really let the audience see what these great features are contributing to the overall experience.
This does not mean that Sony is shifting away from the PC market. They are waling a fine line between pleasing PC gamers and maintaining the value that “PlayStation Exclusives” offer the brand’s consoles. The sad news for PC gamers is that this means that they will have to wait before any PlayStation exclusives come to PC.Â
We already know that Sony is working to bring Uncharted 4 to PC and that they acquired Nixxes Software to work on new PC ports for PlayStation exclusive titles. Sony is investing heavily into the PC gaming market, as they know that their exclusives will still offer value to PC gamers long after their initial PlayStation launches.  Â
