STALKER 2 is getting upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.5.4 – Here’s why

GSC Game World is moving STALKER 2 to Unreal Engine 5.5.4

STALKER 2 fans have a lot to look forward to this year. GSC Game World has released a “game update list” that covers Q3 and Q4 2025. This list details the new content and changes that will be coming to STALKER 2 this year. Expect new missions, an extended day-night cycle, new anomalies, and more. The game is also getting upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.5.4.

At launch, STALKER 2 used Unreal Engine 5.1. With the move to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, STALKER 2 will benefit from the optimisations and enhancements that Epic Games has made to Unreal Engine. This should allow STALKER 2 to run better on both PC and consoles. PC gamers should benefit from higher framerates on their current hardware setups, and the game should become playable on lower-end hardware.

Moving to Unreal Engine 5.5.4 should deliver major performance benefits. Earlier this year, Open Games and Dev showcased how moving from Unreal Engine 5.4 to Unreal Engine 5.5 could deliver almost 20% performance gains on PC. STALKER 2’s engine upgrade could provide even larger performance uplifts.

Why not move STALKER 2 to Unreal Engine 5.6?

Unreal Engine 5.6 exists, and it delivers further performance optimisations to Epic Games’ engine. However, this engine only launched in June. Simply put, STALKER 2’s developers have likely been working on this engine upgrade for months. With this in mind, moving to Unreal Engine 5.6 would likely require STALKER’s devs to start their engine upgrade path from scratch. Is it possible? Yes. Does that mean that they should scrap their work on Unreal Engine 5.5.4? No!

STALKER 2’s engine upgrade should deliver significant performance improvements. This change will likely coincide with STALKER 2’s PS5 and PS5 Pro release. GSC Game World has said that this upgrade is about “optimisation”, so don’t expect graphical upgrades with this engine change. That said, these optimisations could allow STALKER 2’s console versions to target higher resolutions than before.

Honestly, I am excited to see what this patch delivers. The move from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5.4 should deliver major performance improvements. That’s good news for gamers and great news for STALKER 2 moving forward. After all, this upgrade will improve STALKER 2 and any planned expansions that GSC Game World may be cooking!
