Star Citizen reaches $1 billion in funding over a decade after its reveal

Star Citizen has raised $1 billion, and it still lacks a release date

Since its unveiling in 2012, Star Citizen has officially raised over $1 billion in funding. The game’s original Kickstarter raised $2 million, and now it has raised over 1,000x that amount. Today, players can pledge money to purchase ships and other in-game content. Currently, the game is playable in a pre-alpha state, but it remains far from being finished.

Currently, Star Citizen lacks a firm release date. Furthermore, the game’s single-player element, “Squadron 42”, also lacks a release date. Originally, Squadron 42 was due to be released as a single-player section of Star Citizen. Now, the game is a standalone title in the Star Citizen universe. Regardless, Squadron 42 also lacks a firm release date.

Originally, Star Citizen targeted a 2014 release date. It has now been 14 years since the game was announced, and its release still feels far off.

Cloud Imperium Games is still actively developing Star Citizen and releasing new content for Alpha players. Over time, fans have continued to invest in the game’s future, despite the game’s lack of a clear release timeframe. Squadron 42 is supposed to release this year, though this is far from guaranteed.
