Windows 11 optimisations make multitasking up to 40% faster on 8GB PCs

Windows 11 is getting better, and there’s more to come

Microsoft has worked hard over the past year to improve the user experience of Windows, making the OS faster and more responsive while eliminating some of the OS’ biggest annoyances. Now, Microsoft claims its newest Windows 11 versions (26H2, build 26300.9818 or later) are dramatically faster than older versions on 8GB PCs, especially while multitasking.

Microsoft claims 8GB PCs are now up to 20% more responsive and up to 40% faster at multitasking. Improved memory efficiency allows Windows 11 to deliver more performance despite memory limitations. By using available resources more effectively, Windows 11 users can benefit from improved system performance, even during demanding workloads.

On 8 GB PCs, Windows is now up to 20% more responsive, and multitasking is up to 40% faster in our lab test. More efficient memory use means more room for what you’re doing, whether that’s running a small business, collaborating at work, teaching or learning, or using your PC at home.

Microsoft claims Windows 11 can now keep up to 2GB of extra active data in memory instead of slower storage. That’s a big deal for 8GB PCs. Below is an extreme example showcasing Windows 11’s improved multitasking.

There’s more to come, much more

Microsoft has confirmed more improvements are coming to Windows 11, which should further improve memory utilisation and multitasking performance. Further improvements to memory compression are in the works, along with changes to Windows features and apps that will help them use fewer system resources. This will free up memory for other tasks, which is great news for all PC users.

With WinUI 3, Microsoft aims to make its Windows apps and experiences faster and more responsive. These changes will also reduce memory use, freeing up memory for other tasks. Microsoft is also working with “silicon partners” to optimise how much memory PCs need to reserve for hardware, leaving more available for Windows and apps.

Additionally, Microsoft has said it is working with “third-party app developers” to help their apps use memory more efficiently. Let’s hope that Microsoft is working to improve Discord and WhatsApp, two programs that use much more memory than they should.
