Expect fewer upsells in the future from Windows 11

Big changes are coming to Windows 11, as Microsoft appears to be finally taking feedback seriously. Microsoft has confirmed that it plans to make Windows 11 more performant and reliable. Additionally, Microsoft appears to be looking into removing mandatory logins from the OS, freeing PC users from having to use Microsoft accounts. Now, it looks like Microsoft wants to make Windows 11 a “calmer and more chill OS with fewer upsells”, at least according to Microsoft’s Scott Hanselman.

Every Windows user has been pushed to use OneDrive, Edge, and Bing. Users have also had their OS filled with ads, whether for Xbox Game Pass or for external companies. For many people, their PC no longer feels like theirs. That’s what happens when their OS harasses them with ads and upsells. Recent years have seen Windows shift from a product people use to a vehicle for selling other Microsoft products.

Hopefully, Microsoft is genuinely working to make Windows 11 a better OS. I want to believe what Hanselman is saying, but right now, trust in Microsoft is trust that is misplaced.

Windows 11 needs to respect its users

Microsoft needs to respect its users’ decisions. If they choose not to use Edge, they have chosen not to use it. There shouldn’t be any default browser resets or similar anti-consumer nonsense. Furthermore, if users don’t want to use OneDrive, they should have the option to opt out. Far too many Microsoft apps default to saving data to OneDrive, and frankly, it drives people nuts.

I hope that Microsoft is serious about turning Windows 11 around. PC users need a good OS, and right now, Microsoft isn’t delivering. If Microsoft wants to maintain its position as the “default” OS of PC users, things need to change. We wish the team behind Windows 11’s upcoming improvements the best of luck.
