Windows “Cloud Rebuild” feature enables reinstalls without a USB installer

Windows 11 Insiders can now use Microsoft’s “Cloud Rebuild” feature to reinstall their OS using the cloud

In its latest Windows Insider Build, Microsoft added a new “Cloud Rebuild” feature that lets Windows 11 users recover their installations without USB installation media. Using this feature, Windows can download its own installation image and device drivers and use them to reinstall Windows 11.

This new function can be used in many situations, even when Windows 11 fails to boot. The feature is currently available as part of Microsoft’s KB5127936 preview build for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2. The feature will work so long as Windows 11’s Recovery Environment (WinRE) is usable.

Note that this feature overwrites your existing Windows install, which means that your files will be removed. Users can choose to remove their files or to securely erase their data (which takes longer). IT administrators can also use remote management options for Cloud Rebuilds.

[Cloud rebuild]

  • New! This update introduces Cloud rebuild, a new recovery option that reinstalls Windows 11 using a Windows image and device drivers downloaded from Windows Update, including when Windows is unable to start. No USB media or custom image is required. Cloud rebuild includes:
    • Drive sanitization: Choose to remove your files or securely erase data using the storage hardware’s erase capability before Windows is reinstalled. Sanitization is irreversible.
    • Remote management: IT administrators can configure and start a Cloud rebuild remotely through the Recovery CSP using either the currently installed build or a specified target build.

If you’ve had to reinstall Windows on a PC, making a USB installer for the OS takes time. With Windows’ OS rebuild feature, users can reinstall their OS without creating physical installation media. Fresh Windows installs on new systems will still require physical media, but reinstalls won’t. That’s a handy feature for anyone who wants to refresh their PC or wipe its contents.

Cloud Rebuild is currently available in Windows 11 preview builds, so it’s only a matter of time before this feature becomes more widely available.
