Biwin revolutionises portable storage with its Mini SSD tech
Biwin makes M.2 2230 SSDs look massive with its new Mini SSD drives
Biwin has officially unveiled a new SSD form factor, one that could revolutionise the world of portable devices. The Biwin Mini SSD form factor delivers sequential read speeds of up to 3700 MB/s in a form factor that measures 15mm by 17mm by 1.4mm. That’s much faster than what’s possible with MicroSD Express. Furthermore, this SSD is much smaller than the M.2 2230 form factor SSDs that portable gaming PCs commonly use.
With per-drive capacities of 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, these new SSDs are perfect for future portable gaming systems. The GPD Win 5 and Onexplayer Super X both plan to use these new SSDs. These drives are installed in a similar way to MicroSD cards and SIM cards on modern phones. This makes these new Mini SSD cards easily swappable, which is great news for gamers with large libraries.
Honestly, this new SSD form factor is a great innovation. Upgradable storage for portable devices that can deliver the performance of full-sized PC-grade SSDs. These SSDs are targeted at PCs, laptops, tablets, and cameras. Biwin has not revealed the pricing or release date of these new Mini SSDs.
Widespread adoption could be a challenge
So far, Biwin is the only company that has showcased Mini SSD storage. It is unclear if this will become an industry-wide standard, or if it will be a proprietary solution. If this new SSD form factor becomes widely adopted, it has the potential to greatly impact the PC market. If not, then Mini SSDs and devices that support them will be rare, which would make Mini SSDs expensive.
