Phison responds to Windows 11 SSD failure controversy
Phison’s looking into Windows 11’s SSD-crashing security updates
PC users have been reporting storage failures after the release of Windows 11’s KB5063878 and KB5062660 updates. These updates were released as part of Microsoft’s August 2025 “Patch Tuesday” release cycle, countering the Lumma Stealer malware and other exploits. Now, Phison has commented on this Windows 11 update issue, stating that they are currently working with partners to address these issues.
Through community testing, users have discovered that large (50+GB) sequential writes can cause errors, resulting in affected storage devices disappearing from Windows. This issue has impacted SSDs from several brands and has even reportedly impacted some HDDs. There’s a reason why Phison calls the issue “industry-wide”.
Phison has issued the following statement to several tech publications.
Phison has recently been made aware of the industry-wide effects of the “KB5063878” and “KB5062660” updates on Windows 11 that potentially impacted several storage devices, including some supported by Phison. We understand the disruption this may have caused and promptly engaged industry stakeholders.
We are steadfast in our commitment to product integrity and the success of our partners and end users. At this time, the controllers that may have been affected are under review and we are working with partners. We will continue to provide updates and advisories to partners who may have been impacted to provide support and ensure any applicable remediation.

Currently, it is unknown how these storage issues will be addressed. Will Microsoft address this with new Windows 11 updates, or will Phison mitigate this issue with the release of new SSD firmware? Since Windows 11 updates caused this issue, it makes sense for Microsoft to fix it. However, if firmware issues are a contributing factor, Phison (and other manufacturers) may need to update their storage solutions regardless.
Phison has acknowledged that there is a problem here. Even so, that doesn’t mean that they are the cause of this problem. Remember, this issue doesn’t just impact Phison SSDs. Hopefully we will hear more from Phison soon.
