Phison details upcoming QLC compliant E12 and S12 memory controllers

 
At the Flash Memory Summit, Phison has teased their next generation of high-end SSD controllers, which are set to offer support for exceptionally fast memory speeds as well as QLC NAND. 
 
So far Samsung, Toshiba and Western Digital (Parent Company of SanDisk), have revealed their upcoming QLC memory designs, which are said to offer endurance levels that are much higher than analysts expected and have many within the industry very excited. 

This new memory type will be able to store 4-bits per memory cell, which is a 33% increase over TLC (Triple Level Cell) and a 2x improvement over MLC (Multi-Level-Cell) memory. This will allow more storage capacity to be fitted into a single NAND chip, allowing SSDs to get larger and/or cheaper. 

 

Phison’s upcoming E12 (NVMe) and S12 (SATA) controllers will support this new memory type, offering read and write speeds of 3200/3000 MB/s and 550/530 MB/s respectively.

Phison’s marketing strategy is to roll out QLC support into market segments that will benefit most from the technology, starting with USB and SD before moving into SATA SSDs in Q1 of next year. NVMe support is not expected until late 2018, as this market segment benefits more from the high speeds of other memory types than the capacity per chip of QLC NAND.
