Plextor launches their M9Pe NVMe SSD

Plextor has officially launched their new M9Pe NVMe SSD, a product that is set to release onto the market in early 2018, delivering users 64-layer 3D TLC BiCS NAND from Toshiba in both M.2 and PCIe varieties.

The M9Pe will release with 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions, with the M9PeY variant coming inside a PCIe add-in card, the M9PeG coming in an M.2 form factor with a pre-instaled heatsink and an M9PeGN version in a standard M.2 form factor without a heatsink. These options will allow the M9Pe to fit into most PC form factors, be it a compact notebook where M.2 heatsinks won’t fit, modern consumer motherboards using M.2  slots or other systems using traditional PCIe slots.

These three versions will come with a pricing structure that is designed to undercut Samsung’s 960 Evo across the board, offering a five-year warranty for all models. All of these drives are based on the same M.2 SSD, utilising the same Marvell 88SS1093 controller, with the only differences being the supplied cooling solution and packaging.

Like most NAND-based SSDs, the M9Pe will offer different performance characteristics based on its capacity, with Plextor claiming sequential read speeds of up to 3,200MB/s for the 1TB model and 3,000MB/s on the 256GB version. When looking at the drive’s sequential write speeds, we can see a more significant drop-off, with the 1TB version offering speeds of 2,100MB/s while the 256GB version delivers 1,000MB/s.

When looking at Random performance, the 1TB version offers 400,000/300,000 read/write IOPS while the 512GB version provides 340,000/280,000 and the 256GB version delivers 180,000/160,000 IOPS.

The PCIe version of this SSD will offer a unique RGB function, though sadly the LEDs in this version will not be addressable by users. Colours will change depending on device load automatically, which may be annoying for some users. Thankfully those who dislike this feature could simply buy the basic heatsink-less M.2 version and buy their own PCIe M.2 add-in card.

Exclusively on the Add-In-Card version M9PeY, its RGB design shows red light once powered on and interchanges to different colors while on standby mode. It displays an awesome full spectrum of colors during read/write processes. It definitely delivers an incredibly splendid visual effect.

Below is a list of Plextor’s US pricing for the M9Pe, delivering pricing that is competitive with other low-cost NVMe SSD offerings. Sadly no EU/UK pricing for this device is available.
