Samsung starts mass producing its fastest M.2 SSD to date, the PM9E1

Samsung pushes PCIe 5.0 to its limits with their new PM9E1 SSD

Samsung has started mass production for their new PM9E1 SSD, a PCIe 5.0 M.2 storage solution that promises the “industry’s highest performance”. This new SSD uses Samsung’s 8th Generation 3D V-NAND alongside a new 5nm controller to deliver faster speeds and greater power efficiency.

The new PM9E1 delivers sequential read and write speeds of up to 14.5 GB/s and 13 GB/s, respectively. Storage options for this new M.2 SSD are 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. Samsung claims power efficiency gains of 50% with this drive. This signals that this new SSD will not run as hot as other PCIe 5.0 offerings.

With this new SSD, Samsung has also added new security features. This includes support for Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM) v1.2.

Starting with the PM9E1, Samsung plans to expand its PCIe 5.0 SSD lineup with more consumer-grade products. That means we should expect a new PCIe 5.0-based Samsung PRO series SSD in the future. This will bring Samsung’s top-performing SSD to the mainstream PC market, allowing it to compete with other PCIe 5.0 storage devices.
