Samsung Reveals 1TB eUFS Storage Chip for Smartphones
Now, Samsung’s storage prowess is bringing more of their PC-grade performance into the compact smartphone market, announcing today that they have started mass producing the industry’s first 1TB eUFS 2.1 storage solution. This memory chip will be used to create future high-end smartphones, bringing the company’s mobile devices into the 1TB era.Â
Samsung believes that this new memory solution will enable future mobile devices to deliver more notebook-like performance, with their latest 1TB euFS 2.1 offering enabling 1,000 MB/s sequential writes and 58,000 Random Read IOPS. Performance-wise, this eUFS storage device can offer sequential read speeds that are almost double that of mainstream SATA SSDs, which is an astounding achievement for a mobile-grade storage medium.Â
To create this new SSD, Samsung uses 16 stacked layers of their latest 512Gb fifth generation 3D V-NAND, offering 1TB of storage space. In 2019, Samsung plans to expand their Pyeongtaek plant in Korea in the first half of 2019, a change which will help Samsung meet the market demand for their ultra-high-end eUFS chips.Â

Samsung provided the following speed comparison chart to showcase the high-end performance of their latest eUFS storage chips, showcasing a 38% increase in random read speeds over 2017’s 512GB eUFS drive and an incredible performance lead over the company’s early eUFS devices and MicroSD cards.Â
Samsung claims that their new 1TB eUFS storage device will allow smartphone enthusiasts to record 260 10-minute 4K UHD videos without running out of storage space.Â
With Samsung announcing a 1TB storage chip for smartphones, it is highly probable that the company will offer 1TB storage options with their next-generation of Galaxy smartphones, a change which will likely see high-end models receive a significant price increase.Â
