Silicon Motion reveals 3 PCIe 4.0 SSD controllers – Up to 7,400 MB/s speeds available

Silicon Motion has just revealed three new PCIe 4.0 controllers, products which will allow SSD manufacturers to deliver storage solutions which push the limits of PCIe 4.0 and bring PCIe 4.0 speeds further into the mainstream/value market. 

With the SM2264, Silicon Motion is catering to the performance segment with sequential read speeds of up to 7,400 MB/s. The SM2264 promises speeds which should push Silicon motion to the top of the SSD market; past competing 7,000 MBps SSDs from Samsung, Western Digital and Sabrent. 

Silicon Motion’s latest SSDs were designed with PCIe 4.0 from the outset, delivering lower power consumption, error correction and full EMI protection. All three of Silicon Motion’s new controllers support PCIe 4.0 x4 interfaces, making them perfect for compact M.2 storage devices. 

To cater to the lower end of the SSD market, silicon Motion’s SM2267 and SM 2267XT controllers are designed to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 3,900 MB/s, exceeding the limits of the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface while also enabling lower SSD pricing. Both the SM2267 and SM2267XT are similar in terms of baseline specifications, though the SM2267 features the addition of a DRAM cache to enable increased SSD responsiveness. The SM2267XT will enable the creation of cheaper PCIe 4.0 SSDs. 

Silicon Motion’s SM2264 controller will be manufactured using TSMC’s 12nm process node and will compare with Phison’s E18 controller, Samsung’s PCIe 4.0 Elpis controller and Western Digital’s Black G2 PCIe 4.0 controller. Both the SM2267 and SM2267XT will be built using a 28nm process node to enable lower pricing while retaining PCIe 4.0 speeds.
