Breaking News – Samsung’s Galaxy Fold has Issues

In the world of smartphones, folding screens are the next big thing, with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold being one of the first folding handsets to hit the market. Sadly, things have not been going well for the smartphone so far, with multiple reviewers reporting that their phone’s displays have stopped working within days of use. 

One of the first reports of this issue came from CNBC’s Steve Kovach, showing what happened to his handset after one day of use, revealing that half of his phone’s primary display had stopped working. 

Samsung has responded to these reports by saying that they have recalled these faulty handsets and plan to “thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.” Despite these issues, Samsung plans to release its Galaxy Fold Smartphone on April 26th as originally planned for $1980.
  

Samsung has acknowledged that “a limited number” of early samples have been impacted by this issue, though the manufacturer has noted that a number of impacted devices were damaged through the removal of the top layer of Samsung’s display, which some reviewers thought was a protective film which was designed to be removed. Samsung has stated that users of the Galaxy Fold should not remove this protective layer. 

Below is Samsung’s full comment on the matter.

    Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.

 

  

With a release date that’s less than a week away, Samsung has very little time to mitigate or remedy this issue and avoid another Note 7 like PR nightmare. While early issues are understandable for a new technology like folding displays, most consumers would expect an almost $2000 smartphone to launch without these issues, especially after the years of R&D that Samsung has put into their folding screen technology.
