Up Close

Rather than a top flap type package the entire top of the packaging for the Delta S lifts up to reveal the headset in all its glory.

It’s one of those tiny things that you’ll never notice when you buy three or four headsets in a lifetime, but when you see as many as we do in a year then you quickly gain some mental shortcuts. If the packaging for a product has been designed with care and attention then, despite knowing that different parts of the company design different bits, you can be slightly more certain that the main event has been designed with equal care. It’s only a rule of thumb, but such things exist for a reason. The Delta S makes a good first impression and we haven’t even got it out yet.

Within the box we have a manual, Type-C to Type-A adaptor cable, the detachable microphone and two additional cloth ear pads for those of you who prefer it to leatherette. We’ve tested it as it comes out of the box, but we prefer cloth ones ourselves for long term use.

We will bring you the Delta S lit up on the next page, assuming you’ve not noticed the photo at the top of this one, but for now you can see how much movement is built in to the hinges, and yet they feel very sturdy. Only time far beyond that we have available for a review will give us the true answer, but first impressions and years of experience lead us to believe this particular design should be robust enough to withstand many years of slamming them on the desk in frustration.

Mmm lovely deep ear pieces and a thickly padded headband. Whilst the Delta S weighs just over 300 grams it’s totally comfortable to wear for long periods.

As well as giving you a closer look at the texturing upon the default ear cushions, you can also see the volume wheel and the lighting control. It’s worth noting that the wheel doubles up as the volume mute button, but also doesn’t scroll so much as is an up and down toggle, so it’s really easy to mute your mic by accident.

There is, as always, a serious amount of vertical adjustment in the headband. Thankfully if you have a normal sized head the defaul setting of the headset is just perfect. We always think of this level of height as the “I’m wearing a hat” setting.

Returning to our theme of clues as to quality, any time you spot a microphone that is happy to be itself and not wrapped it a sponge cocoon to protect it from your plosives. The microphone is detachable but sits very solidly in its hole and is in no danger of falling out.

Beneath the covers – thankfully easy to change if you prefer the alternate options supplied in the box – you can catch a glimpse of the 50mm Neodymium drivers that power the Delta S.
