Introduction

If you’ve been following the hardware market for a while you might remember the days when a new CPU was launched alongside some motherboards, there were always two chipsets. The one we actually brought, and the one that usually found a home in a pre-built, bargaintastic system for people who didn’t know any better.

Recent years have seen a massive shift in the market and consistency of these B chipsets, to the point that the only people who buy the full-fat models are ones who haven’t checked the specifications or require a feature that only exists on those. For everyone else you can leave your preconceptions at home and check out the specifications, before coming to the realisation that maybe it will be exactly what you desire.

The B760 chipset is the latest addition to the Intel range, surplanting the B660. It has the LGA1700 socket that enables you to run their newest 13th Generation of Intel Core CPUs, whilst also having a variety of company specific features. Those differences are why we are here, and we’re starting off our previews with MSIs Tomahawk model. A quick glance through the specs show that this might be a fantastic option if you want a fast, but affordable, gaming platform. DDR4 is still significantly more affordable than DDR5, and indeed you probably have some already. Whilst PCIe 5.0 ensures you have all the bandwidth you could desire in the important areas.

As always the specifications are below but we’ll give you the tour of the PCB on the next two pages so you can see each part in the flesh. Or in the copper.
