AMD Ryzen 8000 APU Spotted

One of the best places to get a glimpse of future technologies is looking through recent additions to the various distributed compute platforms.

Many years ago they began with SETI@Home, and then Folding@Home. These proved so successful that a whole range of ways to utilise your computing power turned up, helping cure cancer, search for exoplanets or solve the Covid crisis. One of them is MilkyWay@Home. We’ll let them explain :

In computer science, the project is investigating different optimization methods which are resilient to the fault-prone, heterogeneous and asynchronous nature of Internet computing; such as evolutionary and genetic algorithms, as well as asynchronous newton methods. While in astroinformatics, Milkyway@Home is generating highly accurate three dimensional models of the Sagittarius stream, which provides knowledge about how the Milky Way galaxy was formed and how tidal tails are created when galaxies merge.

Like all BOINC applications they’re a great way to get a feel for your calculative power, and have often been the first place to see new processors appear. Someone at AMD is using it to test an engineering sample of one of the 8000 series CPUs, here in the form of an APU. Its fairly consistent to see the APU’s bearing the next gen naming scheme first. 

APUs have been the way in which AMD have made the most money in recent years, as they are the processor and graphics found beating at the heart of all the current consoles. For there to be an 12 core model on the horizon is certainly interesting for anyone who wants some graphical horsepower without the power draw necessary for a discrete GPU. Similarly there are rumours of a PS5 Pro that refuse to go away, and a new, more powerful, APU being spotted might add fuel to that particular fire.
