AMD plans to support AM4 with future CPU generations

During last nights “we are AMD” Reddit AMA, AMD has announced that they have plans to support their AM4 socket with future CPU generations, which means that current AM4 motherboards will most likely support Zen2 CPUs.

Below is a comment from AMD’s Project Manager James Prior, when asked about the future of the AM4 platform.

We plan for AM4 to be around a long time. Future generations of processors will be delivered into the socket at many price points.

This move is very similar to what AMD has done with their previous generation AM3 socket, which supported AMD’s AM3 Phenom II series, AMD’s Bulldozer series and their Piledriver series of processors. Unlike AM3, AMD’s AM4 socket will support both CPUs and APUs, allowing the new socket to support chips both with and without integrated graphics, opening up AM4 to an even wider user base.

This announcement means that AMD’s AM4 platform will support CPUs beyond Ryzen, which is great news for consumers who want to upgrade their systems without changing their motherboard.
