AMD confirms FSR 4 for handhelds, APUs, and laptops

AMD plans to release FSR 4 for handhelds, laptops, and APUs this year

AMD’s Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Computing and Graphics Group, has confirmed that a new version of FSR 4 is coming to APUs, gaming laptops, and handhelds this year. This move will make AMD’s FSR 4 ML upscaler more widely available.

Right now, it is unclear how this new FSR 4 variant differs from AMD’s existing FSR 4/4.1 models. Is this new handheld variant similar to Sony’s QSSR PS5 upscaler? This new model may be similar to AMD’s planned FSR 4.1 model for its RX 6000 (RDNA 2) GPUs. All Jack Huynh has confirmed is that it is a “lightwieght” model that suits APUs.

We will expand the machine learning AI-based FSR4 technology, which was first introduced to existing external graphics cards, to the entire product line including APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices by the end of this year,

AMD’s new FSR 4 upscaler will suit a wide range of devices. Products like ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally will benefit greatly from higher-quality upscaling. The new model may also benefit products like Valve’s Steam Deck. Even high-end AMD laptops with Strix Halo processors will benefit from this new upscaler, as well as users of laptops with other AMD APUs.

We have newly developed a dedicated model that lightweights the FSR4 to suit the APU environment,

We are focusing on achieving excellent game quality and low latency.

(Is AMD’s lightweight handheld version of FSR 4 similar to Sony’s QSSR?)

Given the limited computational and memory resources available to low-powered gaming devices, AMD’s new FSR 4 model could prove vital for current and future APU-powered gaming laptops and handhelds. If AMD delivers better image quality than existing upscalers, FSR 4 could be a major advantage for AMD-powered devices. However, it is worth noting that Intel and Nvidia both have AI/ML upscalers.
