Arkane has “doubled its thoroughness” for Prey’s PC release
We’re pretty confident,
First of all, it’s not like we first do the game on console and then in the end we suddenly port the game to PC. It starts on PC. That’s how game development works.
A lot of Dishonored 2’s problems on PC stemmed from the fact that the game was based on the companies custom Void Engine, with the use of CryEngine giving Prey’s development a better baseline on which to build this new title.
Colantonio explains that PC development is difficult due to the sheer variety of PC hardware configurations available, which means that developers need to account for the variety of different CPU types used as well the long list of GPUs that PC users will be using to run the game on.
Arkane Austin has doubled their efforts to test a wide range of PC hardware configurations before launch, which should allow the game to perform well on a wider range of configurations. It is worth noting there that this is also the first game that will be launched since Bethesda partnered with AMD for future game developments, which could yield some great performance gains for both AMD Ryzen CPUs and Radeon GPUs.
The real reason why PC games often have problems is because there are so many permutations of hardware, [And] sometimes it’s timing–drivers come out the same time as our game. Something happens that makes it more challenging.
This time we are, given what happened with Dishonored 2, we doubled our thoroughness in making sure that the game is going to run smoothly,
At this point, the game is fully ready, but that’s what we’ve been doing for the past months–a lot of tests on different configurations and making sure it works. So we’re pretty confident. You never know. But we’re pretty confident.
