“Soon” – The Epic Games Store is coming to Linux

Epic Games is working on a native Linux game launcher

It’s official, the Epic Games Store is coming to Linux. Epic Games Staff have confirmed that a native Linux version of their games launcher is in the works, and that it is coming “soon”.

This information was released during an AMA on the Epic Games Store Discord. SteamDeckHQ were the first to report on the news.

What’s clear from Epic’s statements is that Epic isn’t just releasing a native Linux version of the Epic Games Store and calling it a day. Broader platform integration is planned. Currently, the Epic Games Store does not sell native Linux versions of games. Moving forward, native Linux game versions may be supported. That said, it is more likely that Epic will us a compatability layer to allow Windows games to run on Linux, which is similar to how Valve/Steam operates.

More good news for Linux gamers

Epic Games is the only company with Linux ambitions. GOG also plans to bring its PC storefront to Linux. These storefronts will allow these Steam competitors to broaden their user base and take advantage of Valve’s Linux-powered Steam Deck and Steam Machine hardware. Additionally, it also hedges its bets if Windows declines as a gaming OS.

Note that Epic Games is currently creating a redesigned version of the Epic Games launcher. Could this relaunch include a new Linux version?
