There have been a lot of rumours coming from the Nvidia camp in recent months. First that Volta won’t be receiving a consumer release outside of the Titan V, second that Nvidia would soon be releasing new “Ampere” series GPUs and now that the company has plans to release “Turing” series GPUs next month.

Some now believe that all of the above rumours are true, with some suggesting that Turing is not the gaming graphics chip that some expect, but a dedicated cryptocurrency mining card. This hypothesis leaves the option open for Ampere to be Nvidia’s next consumer-grade GPU, with Volta remaining an enterprise-grade offering (and as the semi-consumer Titan V).

This theory does make some logical sense given Alan Turing’s fame as a cryptographer, creating a machine that could uncover the settings of the German’s infamous Enigma machine during World War II during his time at the UK’s Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park. It is also likely that Turing could also be a reference to an AI capable chip, given Turing’s association with artificial intelligence.

Recent rumours suggest that Nvidia has plans to announce a new graphics card next month with a retail date of April 12th, making an announcement at GDC or their own GTC event ideal for the company.

At the moment Nvidia’s future remains shrouded in mystery, though it seems likely that gamers can expect to see new gaming GPUs in the near future.
