Ubisoft reveals huge sales growth on PC in 2017/18 financials
In the year, Far Cry 5 proves to be Ubisoft second biggest release to date, earning $310 million within its first week of sale while games like Assassin’s Creed Origins and Rainbow Six Seige continues to be successful.
Digital revenue is up 37.8% this year, representing 58.0% of total sales, a value of €1,004.7 million. This growth is driven by a 66.2% boost in mobile revenue and increased “Player Recurring Investment” (PRI), earnings from microtransactions, DLC, and other recurring payments. PRI revenue has risen by 58.7%, making up 27.9% of total sales, earning Ubisoft €826 million.
Today, PC is Ubisoft 3rd largest platform by sales revenue, accounting for 21% of sales, an increase from the platform’s 17% of sales last year. This boost makes PC almost as big as Xbox One, which now accounts for 23% of game sales, though PS4 remains dominant with 43% of sales revenue. This gain is even more significant if you consider the release of Nintendo’s Switch console, which accounted for 5% of Ubisoft’s revenue. More platforms were competing for a slice of the pie and PC still managed to increase its revenue share.
The 2017/18 has been good for Ubisoft, with releases like Assassin’s Creed Origins and Far Cry 5 acting as turning points for their respective series’, with recent iterations like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Far Cry Primal proving both divisive and unpopular amongst fans of both series.
If this data is anything to go by, Ubisoft will continue to push for Player Recurring Revenue, which is currently acting as a major growth vector for the company, though their increasing PC revenue will hopefully help them to develop more high-quality PC releases like Far Cry 5.
